The Big Guns Never Tire

Every time I see or hear about a game set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe I get excited. There is no doubt that it is one of the greatest sc-fi universes ever created, with an incredible history, fantastic characters and near limitless story opportunities. Despite this, of the many games that inhabit this universe few truly live up to it’s potential.

Dawn of War was excellent, and thankfully will grace us again soon, and Space Marine was an outstanding and underappreciated game. The other that truly stands out in my mind was way back in 1993 and is largely responsible for getting me into the 40k hobby to begin with, Space Hulk.

Now, in 2016, another Space Hulk is about to be released, Space Hulk: Deathwing. A first person shooter, it’s moved well beyond the game that engrossed and terrified me as a teen, but the name alone has me excited to play it. Nostalgia is a powerful tool after all.

The Emperors finest employ some slightly different tools to get their job done however. As we near release of Space Hulk: Deathwing, publisher Focus Interactive give us a look at the weapons of first company of the Dark Angels. Storm Bolters and Thunder Hammers and Flamers oh my! And, of course, the Assault Canon. When you absolutely, positively need to kill every single xenos in the room….accept no substitute.

I’m quietly hopefully that Space Hulk: Deathwing will join the ranks of great 40k games that came before it. If it doesn’t, at least I’ll be able to purge the xenos with some big arse guns!
